Research & Development for Orange Grove Dance's NEVERMORE
|
What's the best thing to build in a theater when the temperature reaches single digits?
A pool, obviously.
This January, we dove into research and development with Orange Grove Dance as they develop NEVERMORE, a water-drenched descent into the shadowed world of Edgar Allen Poe.

The Voxel's Technical Director Alec Sparks built a shallow pool for OGD to "do some science", as Alec likes to say.
In this case, the science was about: - do projections look cool on fog? (spoiler: yes) - what does it take to heat this much water? (answer: still working on that) - can you project on rain? (yes, the droplets act like tiny lenses, but you need to place the projection source carefully) - how much noise will all this stuff make? (OGD's resident composer Dylan Glatthorn was in the room to tune how his original music and sound design can live alongside pump noises)

Next week, we're excited to host a research and development process with Future Ghost, who you may remember from last year's production of THE DANCE FLOOR, THE HOSPITAL ROOM, AND THE KITCHEN TABLE. They'll be workshopping their new play DADDY alongside design elements (including a crankie) that will culminate in a public reading next Saturday, February 7.
Written and directed by Lyam B Gabel, DADDY is a tender, funny, and mythic love story about trans* pregnancy, desire, and lineage. Set between the present and the reimagined American West, the play follows two queer cowboys as they build a family on their own terms.

Wilderness Suite and Lancelot Chimera
|
Two different musical events!
|
February 20 through March 1
|
Mind on Fire returns to The Voxel this February with two distinct shows across two weekends!
WILDERNESS SUITE uses images, along with live music and pre-recorded electronics, to examine the impression of humankind on the environments it inhabits. This interdisciplinary collaboration sheds light on the stories that the place and those who still live there have to share.
LANCELOT CHIMERA is an electroacoustic concerto for amplified bassoon and tape about games, the apocalypse, and transforming into something else. This is music about individuality and agency and the smell of the earth and good times.

The Voxel is a theater laboratory in the heart of Baltimore City. We are an incubator, research lab, teaching center, and resource for local and national performing artists. We hope that your hard-earned parking spots are holding strong (lawn chairs and all).
