Residency

Voxel Residencies offer an opportunity for you to access and use this space for your own projects.

We are excited to offer two kinds of residencies:

1) Technical Residencies

A Voxel technical residency is intended to give you space, time, money, and resources to work on a performing arts project that integrates technology in some way. Technical residencies are also designed for us to learn from you.

While technical residencies should include a technical component or experiment, they are not intended to mandate technical complexity or for making art that is noticeably technological. You may be interested in using our technical residency because you'd like to try sophisticated audio spatialization that is rare to find outside high-end venues such as Broadway theaters. Or you might want to explore an idea involving shadow puppets on old-school analogue overhead projectors. We don't want to impose a technological aesthetic or agenda on your art, we want to learn how you use technical tools to make art.

Anyone can apply for a Voxel Technical Residency. Applications for technical residencies are evaluated by a committee of Figure 53 employees.

You Get:

  • $5,000 to use on your project. (Travel, housing, materials, pay yourself for your time, etc.)
  • Up to 5 weeks to experiment, rehearse, perform, or do something else that you have pitched to us and we have approved.
  • General support in using the space from the Voxel Technical Director.
  • Use of the Voxel’s inventory of audio, video, lighting, and scenic equipment.

Requirements:

  • Allow us to learn from you and your project. Potential examples include:
    • Lunch with us once a week while you are here.
    • Allow us to observe your process when appropriate.
    • Involve us in your process in some way, such as:
      • Allowing one of our software developers to help you program your artistic goals into QLab or Go Button (to learn about or become motivated by challenges in that process).
      • Allowing one of our support team members to provide expert hands-on workspace programming or other advice.
  • Allow us to record, photograph, or otherwise benefit from the project for our own marketing and educational purposes.
  • Provide feedback to us about how our products worked or didn’t work for the project.
  • Using our products (QLab or Go Button) is NOT required. (But is encouraged.)
  • No performance is required, but if there is a performance The Voxel receives a box office split of 20%.

2) Open Residencies

A Voxel open residency is intended to give Baltimore artists space, time, and resources to work on a performing arts project.

Only Baltimore area residents can apply for a Voxel Open Residency. Applications for open residencies are selected via a weighted lottery; we do not curate open residencies other than to ensure that the project broadly falls within the performing arts.

You Get:

  • Up to 5 weeks to experiment, rehearse, perform, or do something else that you have pitched to us and we have approved.
  • General support in using the space from the Voxel Technical Director.
  • Use of the Voxel’s inventory of audio, video, lighting, and scenic equipment.

Requirements:

  • Limited to Baltimore area artists.
  • No performance is required, but if there is a performance The Voxel receives a box office split of 20%.
  • No interaction with Figure 53 employees is required. However, we'd like the opportunity to observe sometimes (unless you’d prefer that we leave you alone).
