The Stars (NOWISWHENWEARE) is an immersive installation of light and sound, guiding each visitor on a breathtaking journey through your inner self, community, grief, and the one-way-ness of time. Part meditation, part exploration, The Stars draws you into a contemplative and deeply personal encounter with time, memory, and of being "here" and "now".

The Voxel helped workshop The Stars in 2022. It has since toured to New York, London, Wales, Minneapolis, Williamstown, Seattle, Austin, and more.

“The work I make is highly technical, but it is not about the technology. I am more interested in the application of the technology and how it can bring us closer together, shake us from the synthetic, and offer a genuine experience to every audience member’s consciousness, rather than just watching something “over there”. I am interested in how creating meaningful time-based experiences can lead to more meaningful human-to-human interaction."

— Andrew Schneider

This walk-through matrix of more than 5,000 individual LEDs was built specifically for The Voxel. It is easiest to picture as a planetarium you can walk through – whose stars hold the memories of those no longer with us – our elders, those lost too soon, our community.

About the Creators

Andrew Schneider is mostly interested in how humans telling stories about ourselves to each other can make us better at being humans. And how much the second law of thermodynamics and grief have in common.
