(almost) everything we're doing in 2026
|
Hello neighbors,
Well, we've done it again. We've made another trip around the sun together. It wasn't always easy and it wasn't guaranteed, but here we are.
Before we get to what's coming next, here's what happened in 2025:
Not bad for a young venue with a staff of two-and-a-half people and no outside funding. (In case you didn't know, 100% of all ticket sales to every event in 2025 went directly and only to the guest artists. Voxel provided our space, staff, and equipment to these artists for free.)
We're still not asking for your support to help make this happen, although just like last year, this is a reminder that we someday...might!? The world is fraught and creating a space in Baltimore for live art is hard.
Which brings us to 2026. The normal thing to write at this point would be to say how hyped you should be about 2026. But that's just the kind of marketing talk that makes us uncomfortable. And by "us" I mean "me", Chris, the guy who writes these emails and prefers to talk to you like a human individual instead of pretending to be an Organization That Talks.
Because let's be real for a second: you may not be excited about 2026. Or you may be excited but also a lot of other feelings too. Being human is complicated and non-linear, despite what all the marketing emails keep telling us.
So instead we're just going to tell you what we're doing, and you get to decide how you feel about it. If you want to tell us how you feel about it, you are welcome to! Just like last year, I'll simply ask you for your thoughts, instead of your money.
Warmly,
Christopher

Join us on February 7th for a reading of DADDY, a new play by Lyam B. Gabel and Future Ghost. DADDY is a tender, funny, and mythic love story about trans* pregnancy, desire, and lineage. Set between the present and a reimagined American West, the play follows two queer cowboys as they build a family on their own terms. Bites and childcare provided.
Future Ghost previously brought us the dance floor, the hospital room, and the kitchen table.
Email futureghost.projects@gmail.com to secure childcare.

Mind on Fire and icarus Quartet present:
|
In 1980, all human development across 2,361,767 acres of land in central Idaho was ceased, creating the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the largest federally protected wilderness area in the contiguous United States. Now left untouched for 45 years, this landscape tells a unique story of "anti-development."
WILDERNESS SUITE uses images taken before and after the legislation was introduced to protect the Frank Church Wilderness, set into motion by eight video artists, along with live music and pre-recorded electronics, to examine the impression of humankind on the environments it inhabits. This interdisciplinary collaboration unites scientists, filmmakers, and musicians, drawing from and shedding light on the stories that the place and those who still live there have to share.
Composed by longtime Baltimore phenom Ruby Fulton and performed by the ever rising icarus Quartet, a virtuosic combination of pianos and percussion. Produced by Mind on Fire.

February 27 through March 1
|
LANCELOT CHIMERA is an electroacoustic concerto for amplified bassoon and tape about games, the apocalypse, and transforming into something else. This is music about individuality and agency and the smell of the earth and good times.
Every Lancelot will be a perfect knight turned away by God at the threshold of the holy grail for the sin of adultery. Every Chimera will be created to rage into a multiplex of animal chaos. Every concerto is a confrontation between an individual and a mass, but what if these two bodies are the same?
Composed and performed by James Young. Tech directed by Jason Charney. Produced by Mind on Fire.

Orange Grove Dance presents:
|
Come see Orange Grove Dance’s evocative water-drenched descent into the shadowed emotional world of Edgar Allan Poe. Drawing from his haunting poetry and darkly revelatory tales, NEVERMORE transforms The Voxel into a shifting landscape of memory, downpours, obsession, and stark beauty…where movement, light, and madness blur the line between the living and the spectral.

You can also follow us on Instagram to see behind-the-scenes R&D as we explore how to manage lots and lots of water on stage.
